I’ve always been an “artsy” person, but actively creating art with a pen, pencil, marker or paintbrush (my artistic weapons of choice) on a regular basis has been knocked a few pegs underneath other priorities, off and on throughout my life. Things are a-changin’, though. In the last few months I’ve beefed up my art supply collection, investing in some higher-quality mixed media paper pads, actual marker paper to help keep my Tombow brush marker tips in check, and a serious hoard of do-it-all Micron pens. I’m becoming pickier about the watercolors I purchase, I research more before I buy a new tube of acrylic paint, and I follow more random artists on Instagram than people I actually know. Working art into my daily life is not an issue any longer; I’m constantly inspired to create, and now my only obstacle is doing so on a regular basis.
Sketchbooks are nifty things, in so many styles and sizes that it’s hard to pick the one for daily drawing. I have several, serving different purposes, housing different themes between the covers (hand lettering with pencil in one, hand lettering with brush markers in another, sketching out watercolor ideas in yet another, etc.) What I’ve needed is a perfectly-sized book to keep with me, at all times, to simply sketch in with pencil and/or pen. Not too small, and no frills, just a heavier weight smooth paper to put whatever on; a place to keep my imperfect work as I try new techniques, practice basic skills, or simply draw something I see or like or feel inspired by. I want to sketch something every single day. I need to do this in 2018, and on. I finally settled on a black, soft-cover Moleskine folio notebook to fill up with all of my glorious sketching.
My sketches won’t always be detailed (I’m starting to feel carpal tunnel symptoms). They probably won’t be “pretty,” because they will be imperfect and in gray scale. But, they’ll be mine. I’m pretty excited about this, and while there are tons of other things to handle on a daily basis, I’ve come to a place in my life where art is not just a favorite pastime or hobby, but an essential part of self-care. Y’all, I’ll go cray-cray if I don’t express myself artistically!
I can’t decide whether I’ll share everything, share some things, keep it all private, or what. If I do share, how? Glimpses on Snapchat and Instagram stories could be fun (I already do this quite often), but I’m considering a more permanent house. Tumblr, maybe? Who knows.
I’ve gotta get to sketchin’, first.
